Certified Irlen Testing Centres

Worldwide, there are Irlen Centres in about 30 countries, operated by certified Irlen consultants. On this page you will find an overview of what to expect from a consultation, as well as a complete list of all licensed Irlen Centres in Australasia. If someone offers to test for coloured glasses, check that they are on this list, or that they work at a Centre on this list. If they do not, they have not been properly trained nor are they licensed to carry out this procedure.

Please note that there are only two optical laboratories worldwide licensed to tint Irlen filters to specification. Precise accuracy in tinting is essential to correct performance from the filters. Consultation for Irlen Syndrome (IS) typically consists of two sessions - a diagnostic session and a tinting session. These may occur on the same day, or separately.

The first session involves assessment of the various symptoms known to be typical of IS. Although these symptoms are well known, they occur in different combinations and to different degrees in different individuals. It is important to assess the exact pattern for any individual. If during this session, no or very few symptoms of IS are identified, other avenues may be explored, or the assessment may conclude at this point. If there is some doubt as to the appropriateness of colour filtering, you may be given a specified coloured overlay with which to experiment further. This first session normally takes about an hour. Should symptoms be appropriate, a second session would proceed.

The second session identifies which colour or combination of colours will provide optimal benefit. The consultant varies a large number of hues and densities which may be used in combination for optimal effect. This session usually takes about an hour. The lenses then need to be tinted and this is done at a licensed Irlen laboratory to ensure correct precision tinting. Recheck assessments are necessary periodically as the colours people need change over time.
